Today, we do not identify products and materials throughout their lifecycle. With hundreds of billions of products produced annually, it is impossible to manage these products in circular economy without being able to identify them. Poor lifecycle management of our clothes means they are likely used briefly and sent to landfill or incineration. This linear economic model of take-make-waste is depleting natural resources, producing waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing business model innovation.

For circular economy — the model for sustainable growth based on the reuse of materials and zero waste — to gain adoption in fashion, systems must exist to maximize each product’s use, retain their highest value, and continuously reuse their composite materials.

Without product identification, it is impossible to operationalize circular economy. Circular economy business models (e.g. resale, rental, reuse, sharing, reverse logistics) require products to be systematically identified to function effectively and scale globally. Material regeneration processes (e.g. recycling, disassembly) require detailed understanding of a product’s material components in order to sort, reuse, process and regenerate those component materials.

The retroactive identification and management of products and materials today prevents us from operationalizing circular economy. It also fails to solve for the lack of incentives and transparency across business, consumer behavior, and policy so essential to fundamental systems change.

CircularID™ is the global standard and digital system for identification and management of products in the circular economy.

A global system for identification and management of products is essential to operationalize circular economy and introduce new incentives for fundamental systems change. CircularID™ powers efficient communication across the product lifecycle, unlocks incentives for circular economy business models, and allows for transparency and accountability in circular economy.

CircularID makes it possible to systematically identify products through  circular economy business  models (e.g. resale, repair, rental, share etc). CircularID also makes it possible to identify a product's materials to enable reuse and regeneration (e.g.  recycling, disassembly). With CircularID, circular economy stakeholders (e.g. resellers, renters, repair providers,  recyclers, etc) can access information about  the product essential to powering sustainable lifecycle management. CircularID makes it possible to maximize economic value of products in the second market, and to create new economic incentives for the adoption of circular economy business models.

CircularID enables brands to provide lifecycle transparency, operationalize circular business models and improve customer experience. By introducing CircularID, brands ensure the information essential for circular economy stays with the product throughout its life.

This global system for product identification and management will fundamentally change our current model of production and consumption, introducing new economic incentives for circular business essential to securing our regenerative future.

Reduced Resource Consumption

CircularID™ can reduce consumption and reliance on natural resources by making it possible to reuse and recover products and materials already in circulation.

Transparency

CircularID™ gives every product a unique digital profile, enabling item-level transparency not just from production to point-of-sale, but also through use, reuse, and regeneration.

Resale

CircularID™ makes it possible to instantly access information essential for identification and resale (e.g. brand, authenticity, description, sizing, materials). Today, resellers spend long periods of time trying to identify products for resale, manually entering all supporting product details.

Repair

CircularID™ makes it possible to identify product components to support repair. For example, a repair organization can scan the product and identify the exact zipper type, so that it can be ordered and replaced, restoring the product to original quality.

Recycling

CircularID™ streamlines access to information about the product essential to chemical and mechanical recycling processes (e.g. blended material content, dye color and process, chemical content) and enables efficient sorting for a diverse range of unique recycling specifications.

Rental & Sharing

CircularID™ powers item-level tracking and reverse logistics essential for rental, sharing, and subscription business models.

Measurement and Accountability

CircularID™ unlocks transparency essential to measuring and analyzing product movement throughout all segments of the circular economy.
